Havanese Club of America Awards Policy

HCA awards are given to recognize the achievements of HCA members and their dogs. Awards are given only to current HCA members. Awards are given for accomplishments at AKC shows. The awards are presented annually at the HCA annual dinner held in conjunction with the National Specialty show. Awards will be mailed to those members not in attendance at the annual dinner.

To qualify for an HCA award, the recipient must have been an HCA member at the time each of the requirements for the award was completed. Eligibility for earning an award begins on the date that a person becomes an HCA member. Achievements prior to membership date are not included when calculating HCA award eligibility.

To be eligible for the junior Handler Award, the recipient must be either a Junior Member of HCA, a member of the immediate family of an HCA member, or must co-own a Havanese with an HCA member.

The source of information for all awards is the American Kennel Club Awards Magazine.

The following awards are presented annually based on the show year January through December:

  • Show Dog of the Year - All Breed Points  (highest number of group points won)
  • Show Dog of the Year - Breed Points   (highest number of points won in breed competition)
  • Stud Dog of the Year (the most champions sired by a dog)
  • Brood Bitch of the Year  (the most champions produced by a bitch)
  • Highest Scoring Junior Handler  (information provided by Juniors Committee)
  • Highest Scoring Obedience Dog
  • Highest Scoring Rally Dog
  • Highest Scoring Agility Dog

If two or more dogs have tie scores for the above awards, duplicate awards will be given.

The following awards are presented annually. Since these are cumulative awards, and not based on competition, they are calculated as close to the date of the annual dinner as is possible to still allow time to have awards made up:

  • Breeder of Merit is awarded to breeders who have produced 10 AKC champions
  • Performance Breeder of Merit is awarded to breeders who have produced 10 individual dogs earning AKC performance titles.
  • Breeder of Distinction is awarded to breeders who have produced 25 AKC champions
  • Register of Merit is awarded to dogs that have sired 10 champions and to bitches that have produced 5 champions
  • Register of Merit Excellent is awarded to dogs that have sired 20 champions and to bitches that have produced 10 champions
  • Versatility is awarded to dogs that have completed all of the following: 1) a Conformation championship, 2) an Agility title and 3) any of the following AKC titles: Obedience, Rally or Tracking.
  • Performance Versatility is awarded to dogs that have completed titles in any 3 AKC events: Obedience, Rally, Agility or Tracking.

In the event that an award is made in two or more names (co-owners), the award will be presented to the first person listed as an owner in the American Kennel Club Awards Magazine who is an HCA member. If any of the other owners want duplicate awards, they must pay the entire cost of having the duplicate award made, plus any postage costs. This option is only available to HCA members.
